BSHS Diversity Ambassadors
This past Wednesday, October 25th, and Thursday, October 26th during seminar, the Diversity Ambassadors hosted an event to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. The event was the second annual Hispanic Heritage Fiesta. The Ambassadors wanted to highlight the month in a special way, for the second time. This consisted of a performance by the band, Groupo Memento, a quinceanera fashion show, and ended with dancing and snacks for the students.
The event began with the quinceanera fashion show. It had five girls in beautiful dresses, as well as their escorts. Sophomore Yailyn Corrales and her escort Emiliano Martinez, sophomore Valeria Carrillo and her escort Haxel Flored, sophomore Sophia Aguilar and her escorts Sebastian and Emily Gallegos, sophomore Pamela Ramirez Bautista and her escorts Perla Ramirez and Joyonia Parker, and freshman Liliana Madrigal and her escort Talia Perez. The girls walked down a red carpet as they were introduced to the crowd. It was a special way for the girls to show the transition in their culture they made, from girl to woman.
After the fashion show, the band played music while the students had time to dance, get a snack bag with Hispanic candies and juice, or buy Elote, also known as Mexican street corn, that some of the students helped make. The students felt very honored that their culture was represented in such a fun way. “The energy for the event was there. At first, people were shy, but they began to come out of their shells”, senior Alondra Gomez said about the event. She said she felt very appreciated, “a lot of schools don’t celebrate our culture, it was nice to be able to show people the things that we do”.
Throughout the month, the Diversity Ambassadors held pop-up dance opportunities in the commons area for the students. It was designed to be like a flash mob, where students could dance with one another to Spanish music. The students were encouraged to bring their own Hispanic flags, so they could showcase their culture further while they were dancing.
The Diversity Ambassadors spent a lot of time planning the event for the students, but it was all worth it. When asked about how she felt about the event, Mrs. Harrell said, “I am honored that we were able to create an event that celebrated our Hispanic student’s culture. I love how the students celebrated those cultures, embraced them, and tried something new. I am appreciative that our staff, admin, and our school district support us putting on events like this to celebrate other cultures.” We are excited to see what our Diversity Ambassadors will do in the future for Hispanic Heritage Month!
