Junior Jacob Deichert ran a 16:28 at regionals last weekend, breaking the school record at Kanza Park in Topeka.

The previous record was 16:31, set 10 years ago in 2009 by Brooks Ballou. Head coach Mike Lewis was beyond excited for Deichert.

“Words couldn’t even describe it,” Lewis said. “He listened to the instructions and strategies and carried it out to a T.”

Deichert had been close to senior Mykael White the whole season, according to Lewis, and they were neck and neck for the whole regional race, qualifying for state together.

“They were talking on the bus about how Mykael would tell him to calm down and save his energy for later in the race,” Lewis said.

Deichert and White have had a brotherly bond throughout the entire season, encouraging each other to do better.

“It’s good to have someone who knows more than you do to help you along,” Deichert said.

This weekend Deichert and White will be competing in the state meet at Rim Rock Farms in Lawrence this Saturday, Nov. 2.
