Freshman Landen Hill has been exceptional in his first year for the Braves swim team, making him the Bonner Springs Athlete of the Week.

Hill, who has swum competitively for eight years, participates in the 200-yard freestyle relay, the 200-yard medley relay, the 400-yard freestyle relay, the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 breast for the Braves.

As a freshman, Hill has emerged as a top swimmer for the Braves. Hill placed third in the 100 breast and was part of second-place finishes by the 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams at the home meet on Feb. 2.

“My favorite event is the 100 breaststroke because I believe I can win the race most of the time,” said Hill.

At the Wyco Invitational on Jan. 30, Hill took first in both the 200 IM and the 100 breast. Hill was on both the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay teams, which both captured first-place finishes.

Hill believes he wouldn’t have all of this early success if it wasn’t for the support system around him.

“I attribute my success to my teammates, my coaches and my Mom,” said Hill.

Hill has already reached his ultimate goal for his freshman year, which is making it to state. Hill has qualified for state in the 200 medley relay as the breaststroke leg, as well as the 200 free relay.

Hill and the Braves look to keep improving in this last leg of the season. The Braves next meet will be on Feb. 12 at Lawrence Free State High School.
