History of Woman’s Wrestling

Recently from 2022 to 2023, women’s wrestling has grown since 1994. Since 1994 the number of women who wrestled in high school went from 804 to 50,000 People do say that there are more than 50,000. In 2020 that is when they decided to announce that they would recognize women’s wrestling as an emerging sport. More than 150 colleges now sponsor varsity wrestling for girls. As of right now, there is not a NCAA wrestling torment for women’s wrestling but there is still a National Collegiate women’s wrestling championship.

The biggest difference between Men’s wrestling and Women’s wrestling is that there is 1 division team for Women. Girls were not able to wrestle until the late 1980’s. Most girls did not start wrestling until the 2000s. The first girl wrestler was Moolah was born in South Carolina in 1923. The reason that Moolah started wrestling was to keep her mind off of her mom, so her dad took her to a few wrestling matches.

Some of the biggest tournaments that happen in the world that go on now allow more than a couple of girls. WOW is another word people use to shorten what it really stands for WOW stands for Women of Wrestilng. Another difference between girls’ and boys wrestling is that the weights classes are different. One thing about wrestling there are different styles of it. There are 3 different types of wrestling styles there is folkstyle, freestyle, and greco but in college for girls, it’s only freestyle.
